Where to stay in Costa Rica

10 yoga retreats in Costa Rica, coast by coast

Costa Rica's yoga retreats cluster in a few places: Montezuma and Santa Teresa on the southern Nicoya Peninsula, Nosara farther north, Dominical and the Osa in the south, and the hills above Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean. Pick the coast first, then the style: a full retreat with set classes, a surf and yoga week, or a hotel where yoga is one part of the day.

We first put together a list of Costa Rica yoga retreats in 2015. A few of the original 10 have since closed or stopped running retreats, so we've rechecked every place in October 2026 and rebuilt the list around where each retreat sits on a route. If you want a second list to compare, Costa Rica Journeys keeps its own roundup of yoga retreats in Costa Rica.

How to choose

Start with the coast. The southern Nicoya Peninsula has the most retreats and the easiest mix of yoga, beaches and surf. Nosara, farther up the same coast, is quieter and very yoga-focused. The south Pacific, from Dominical to the Osa Peninsula, adds rainforest and wildlife. The Caribbean side is greener, wetter and more laid-back.

Then think about how structured you want the week to be. Some places run full retreats with a set schedule, meals and workshops. Others are hotels where you can drop into a class and spend the rest of the day at the beach.

The southern Nicoya Peninsula

Anamaya Resort and Retreat Center, Montezuma

Anamaya sits in the jungle on the hill above Montezuma, with a saltwater infinity pool and sunrise and sunset yoga looking out over the ocean. It runs its own wellness and yoga retreats, 200-hour yoga teacher trainings and a calendar of retreats led by visiting teachers, and other teachers can book it to host their own groups. Meals are organic, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and there's a spa with massage, an infrared sauna and an ice bath. It was named a National Geographic Best of the World wellness destination for 2026. Costa Rica Journeys has a longer Anamaya profile if you'd like more detail.

Montezuma itself is small and walkable, with waterfalls and beaches close by. See our Playa Montezuma guide.

Pura Vida Adventures, Santa Teresa

Pura Vida Adventures has run surf and yoga retreats in Santa Teresa since 2003. Many of its weeks are for women only, and it also runs co-ed camps and special weeks such as a mother-daughter retreat. Surf coaching is in small groups with video analysis, yoga is daily in an open-air studio by the beach, and meals and beachfront lodging are included. Costa Rica Journeys has a Pura Vida Adventures write-up too.

Horizon Yoga Hotel, Santa Teresa

Horizon Yoga Hotel is a hillside hotel of wooden cabins and villas above Santa Teresa, with a yoga deck at the top of the property, a pool and a vegetarian restaurant. Every unit has a kitchen, so it works well for longer, independent stays where yoga is one part of the day.

Nosara and Guanacaste

Blue Spirit, Nosara

Blue Spirit is a yoga and meditation retreat center on a hilltop above a long white-sand beach in Nosara. The beach is protected as a turtle refuge. It runs a calendar of yoga and meditation retreats, and you can also host your own group there. A detox program, spa services and a longevity center round it out.

PachaMama, San Juanillo

PachaMama is a meditation community and eco village in the forest at San Juanillo, just north of Nosara. It's best known for silent retreats and meditation, and it also runs daily yoga, body cleanse programs and yoga teacher trainings. It's a different kind of stay from a beach hotel: come for the inner work, not the pool.

El Sabanero, Tamarindo

El Sabanero is a wellness and yoga retreat on the edge of Tamarindo, with bungalows, an infinity pool, yoga, spa days and detox programs. It's an easy choice at the start or end of a trip through Liberia's airport.

The south Pacific and the Osa

Danyasa, Dominical

Danyasa is an adults-only yoga retreat and boutique hotel by the Barú River in Dominical, a short walk from the beach. It has a bamboo yoga studio, a pool and rooms built partly from upcycled shipping containers, and it runs retreats and yoga teacher trainings. Dominical's surf makes it a good surf and yoga base.

Blue Osa, Puerto Jiménez

Blue Osa is a yoga retreat and spa by the beach at Playa Tamales, near Puerto Jiménez. Daily yoga and spa time come with the Osa's wildlife on the doorstep, and Corcovado trips are close at hand.

Luna Lodge, near Corcovado

Luna Lodge sits in the rainforest of the Osa Peninsula near Corcovado National Park, with bungalows, rooms and safari tents looking into the canopy. Three meals a day are included, and it hosts yoga retreats as well as individual guests. It's remote: most people fly to Puerto Jiménez, then take a 4x4 transfer of about 2 to 2.5 hours or a charter flight. The lodge closes in October and part of November. Our Osa Peninsula guide explains how to fit the area into a trip.

The Caribbean

Samasati, near Puerto Viejo

Samasati is a yoga retreat and rainforest eco lodge on a hilltop above the Caribbean coast, about 15 to 20 minutes by shuttle from Puerto Viejo. It has forest views, a pool and yoga classes, with the Caribbean beaches a short ride away. Costa Rica Journeys has an older Samasati Nature Retreat profile as well. See our Caribbean coast guide.

Fitting a retreat into a trip

A retreat works best as the last part of a route, after the busier days of national parks and drives. A typical plan is a week of Arenal and Monteverde, then 5 to 7 nights at a retreat on the coast. If you're only doing a short stay, choose a hotel with drop-in classes rather than a full retreat week. For more places to stay, see our where to stay guide, and for more retreat centers around the world, Retreat Vacations has a long list of Costa Rica options.
