What it's like
Horizon sits on a hillside above Santa Teresa, on the Pacific side of the southern Nicoya Peninsula. The hotel is made up of wooden cabins and villas set in tropical gardens, and most of them look out to the ocean. At the top of the property is the yoga deck, with views over Santa Teresa and Mal País.

The rooms
There are four kinds of lodging: ocean-view cabins for singles or couples, an ocean-view suite, Villa Zen, and the Yin and Yang villas. All units have kitchens, air conditioning and Wi-Fi. The two-storey villas also have their own garden, pool and parking, which makes them a good fit for small families or friends traveling together.
Because every unit has a kitchen, Horizon works well for longer stays. Santa Teresa has plenty of grocery stores and restaurants a short drive down the hill.
Yoga, food and massage
Yoga classes run on the deck at the top of the hill, and the hotel hosts yoga retreats. There's a pool and an open-air massage rancho with an ocean view. The vegetarian restaurant and tea house serves organic food and, according to the hotel, is open to the public Monday to Saturday for breakfast and lunch.
Where it fits in a trip
Santa Teresa is a surf town first, and many travelers spend the last four or five days of a Costa Rica trip here. Horizon gives you the beach and the waves without being in the busiest part of town. From here you can visit Santa Teresa beach, Cabo Blanco at the tip of the peninsula, and the waterfalls at Montezuma.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)
It suits yoga lovers, couples and surfers who prefer a quiet hillside to a beachfront party, and anyone who likes having a kitchen.
It's not beachfront, so you'll be driving, cycling or walking down the hill to the sand. Roads around Santa Teresa are rough in places, and the hotel recommends a 4x4 if you're driving from San José.
Getting there
The hotel's own travel page gives three main options:
- Fly: a domestic flight from San José to Cóbano with Sansa or Green Airways takes about 30 minutes, then it's around 25 minutes by car to the hotel. The hotel can book a taxi to meet you.
- Drive from San José: go to Puntarenas, take the ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya to Paquera, then drive via Cóbano to Santa Teresa. The hotel says the whole trip takes around 4.5 hours, and it suggests buying ferry tickets online in advance.
- Drive from Liberia: about 5 hours via Santa Cruz, Nicoya and Paquera.

Can non-guests eat at the restaurant?
The hotel says its vegetarian restaurant and tea house is open to the public Monday to Saturday, from 7:30 am to 2 pm.

Do I need a 4x4?
The hotel recommends one if you're driving from San José.
