Surf Inn Hermosa

What it's like

Surf Inn Hermosa is a small, no-frills surf complex sitting right on Playa Hermosa, the black sand beach just south of Jacó on the Central Pacific coast. Playa Hermosa is one of Costa Rica's best-known surf beaches, with powerful, consistent waves, and the whole idea here is location: you can check the waves from your door and be paddling out in a minute or two.

The inn calls itself a surf "basecamp" rather than a hotel, and that's a fair description. Expect clean, simple rooms, a kitchen so you can cook between sessions, reliable Wi-Fi and a short walk to local restaurants. The site also runs a live surf cam so you can see what the break is doing before you book.

The accommodation

There are two main styles:

• Simple surf studios: compact units steps from the lineup, good for solo surfers or couples
• Oceanfront apartments: larger units right on the main break, including a two-bedroom option that suits families or friends traveling together

All are set up for self-catering, and the inn takes bookings directly by email, phone or WhatsApp.

Surfing and fishing

The inn offers surf lessons for beginners and surf guiding for intermediate and advanced surfers, plus multi-day surf packages that bundle the stay, daily sessions and transfers from San José airport. Board rentals are available for all levels. Playa Hermosa's waves are strong, so first-timers should go with a lesson rather than paddling out alone.

Between surf sessions, the inn can book inshore and offshore fishing charters, mostly from Los Sueños Marina in Herradura, a short drive north. Offshore trips target marlin and sailfish, and inshore trips go after mahi mahi, tuna, roosterfish and snapper.

Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It suits surfers who care more about wave access than hotel extras, plus digital nomads who want to surf before work. It's not a resort, so if you want a spa, a big pool and on-site dining, look at the larger hotels around Jacó instead.

Getting there
