## What it's like

Hotel Jinetes de Osa sits just off the beach in Drake Bay, a small, hard-to-reach village on the north side of the [Osa Peninsula](/osa-peninsula/). We first wrote about it in 2015. When we checked again in October 2026, the hotel's site was up to date with 2025-2026 rates and it was taking bookings.

The old name's domain, jinetesdeosa.com, now forwards to the hotel's current site at completelycostarica.com, so don't be thrown if you land there.

The hotel has around 15 rooms spread over a hillside facing the bay. Some are ocean front, some look out over the jungle or the garden, and a few suites have two bedrooms and a small kitchenette for families. Every room has air conditioning and hot breakfast is included. The rooms were redecorated with murals and paintings on a jungle or ocean theme. Be ready for stairs: several of the rooms with the best views are up the slope.

## Food

Breakfast is a hot buffet served early, which helps on tour days that start at dawn. Claudio's Grill, the open-air restaurant, does lunch and dinner every day with a menu that changes weekly: think grilled snapper, curries, ceviche and a vegan option. There's a bar in the afternoon and evening, and the terrace looks straight out over the water.

## Diving and tours

Diving is the big draw. Costa Rica Adventure Divers, the hotel's on-site dive center, is a PADI shop that has been running trips in this area for a long time. Most dives are around Caño Island, where you can expect big schools of fish, reef sharks, rays and turtles. They run fun dives for certified divers as well as Discover Scuba, Open Water and Advanced courses. Our [scuba diving guide](/scuba-diving-costa-rica/) has more on Caño Island and other Costa Rica dive areas.

The hotel also books naturalist tours with local guides:

- Day hikes in [Corcovado National Park](/corcovado-national-park/) from San Pedrillo or Sirena station
- Snorkeling at Caño Island
- Whale and dolphin trips, best for humpbacks from late July to September
- Horseback rides through the jungle or along the beach
- Guided kayak trips on a jungle river, or kayak rental
- A waterfall hike near the park

Corcovado now uses a reservation system with daily visitor limits, so the hotel can't promise a specific station. You'll need to send full names and passport numbers when you book a park tour.

## Who it suits (and who it doesn't)

It suits divers, snorkelers and anyone who wants their tours arranged by the people they're staying with. It's a good fit for families, too, thanks to the larger rooms. It isn't a luxury resort, and it's a 10 to 15 minute walk from the village center. If you have trouble with stairs, ask for a ground-level ocean-front room.

## Getting there

Drake Bay has no easy road access. The quickest way in is a short domestic flight from San José to Drake Bay's airstrip, then a 20-minute taxi to town. The other common route is to drive or take a bus to Sierpe, leave your car in a guarded lot and take the shared boat down the Sierpe River and along the coast, about an hour. The hotel recommends the late morning boat, which drops guests on the beach near the hotel. You can also drive in with a 4x4 via Rincón; the road has bridges now but it's still rough dirt. See [getting around Costa Rica](/getting-around-costa-rica/) for more on domestic flights and shuttles.
